It is very fortunate of us to spend Christmas with family and relatives. It is not always that we can come home for Christmas. The good thing, Singapore is just a 3.5 hr plane ride to Cebu, Philippines. Allow me to share with you some of our traditions.
In Philippines, singing Christmas songs from house to house is a tradition. In return, we give money or in kind. You start hearing Christmas songs playing in the radio as early as September though not often till December. Malls are always on sale during the holidays. Some Malls do midnight sale. Everybody is on a shopping mode. Christmas party here, there and everywhere. Oh, not to forget the Christmas Bonus, noise, fireworks and Noche Buena with family on the eve of Christmas. When I was still single, together with friends, we went on house hopping to visit our relatives and other friends till dawn.
On Christmas day morning, you could see the street covered with scrap paper from the firecrackers. The celebration continues with loud music, dancing, drinking, singing and get together party. Some community have Christmas Belen or Christmas Decoration Contest.
Some go back to their provinces to be with family and relatives. Like us, we went to my mother-in-law’s hometown – Samboan. Here are some pictures…
The Parish had Christmas Tree and Belen contest This captured my attention. A Christmas tree made from corn cob, leaves and dried coconut. Great Idea! Brgy. Basak team.
It is very relaxing to be near the beach. Not sandy though, but I enjoyed playing the pebbles. My daughter and son had a blast.
It doesn’t really matter to have expensive food, clothes or big party on this special day, what matters most is being with family even if it’s a simple noche buena and remembering the child Jesus, without him there is no Christmas.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! May you have a blessed and joyous holiday!
