So you want to start a blog or been blogging and don’t know your goals yet? Here are some great blogging tips from Bloggers who have been in your shoes.
Blogging is quite daunting especially if you are very new and have no idea where or how to start. There are a lot of things that you need to set-up, you maybe force to learn basic HTML codes, SEO and social networking. These are some lessons I learned along the way.
1. Blogging is hard work.
If you happen to read my post 5 Realities About Blogging – I mentioned there that Blogging is a lot of hard work, commitment and sometimes overwhelming. You have to have perseverance and patience. As you go along with your blogging journey, remind yourself why you are blogging in the first place. This helped me a lot not to feel disappointed and frustrated. It kept me going even when there are times that I just want to quit.
2. Join Linky parties
On my second year in blogging, I wanted viewers and increase my readership. I was so lost how to do this. I kept asking my family and friends to visit my blog and begging them to leave a comment. I think most of us have been in this kind of situation. Building blog audience is not easy. I joined linky parties which actually helps a lot in bringing traffic to my site. Slowly, I meet new friends who are also newbies at that time. Keep socializing and know your Bloggy friends. If you are a newbie blogger, you must understand that comments will come in time. If you want comments, start commenting with other blogs. For sure, there will be Bloggers who will check on you and leave comments in return. Aside from that by leaving comments you are already putting your name out there that will potentially gain clicks from other bloggers or visitors of that certain site. Be sure not to leave spammy comments.
3. Make sure to have an account on big social media sites.
As a Blogger, you should have accounts at major social media platforms like FB, G+, Twitter, You tube etc. You may want to promote your post at these social media and meet new friends along the way. Some blogs make it hard for their readers to follow them. Some of them do not have a social media buttons. Gosh! I want to follow you but how? Please place it above the fold where it can be seen easily. I have noticed also that some blogs do not have Author/ blog owner’s name in it. When I comment, I usually address the author by their name. It is more casual and friendly way of connecting with the writer/blog owner unless if you want to be address by your site’s name.
4. Reach out to your audience.
As a Blogger, you need to reach out to your audience too. Stop writing like you are the only person in the world. Ask your readers what are their thoughts. Encourage them to leave comments. Go to social media sites and socialize with your followers. Most of my followers are bloggers as well. For example I go to G+, share their post, comment or +1’d their post etc. In twitter, comment, re-tweet or favorite their tweets. These are just examples, I am sure you’ll do more at one media site or another.
5. You need to know your niche, voice, and what your readers want to read.
I am lucky enough that when I started I already know what is my niche but to some bloggers they are struggling on this part. Find your inner blogging voice, I am still struggling and working on this area. It may take time, ask yourself if you are a reader of your blog what would you want to read? Does your blog sound too negative? Do want more specific topics? What are you good at doing?
6. Invest in your blog
I have learned along the way that you also need to invest in your blog. When I started blogging, I never think of giving give-away, advertising my blog with other blogs, or co-hosting. Newbie or not so newbie we want to grow our followers. Give-away is a great way to kick the numbers in short time. Aside from that, it is a great way of saying thank you to your readers for sticking with you. Co-hosting is another great way in increasing followers. Some bloggers may charge a co-hosting fee like me Blog owners has to pay the monthly or yearly fee for using the service. So, the co-hosting fee actually helps the owner shoulder the cost. Text linky tools is free but of course it is very nice to use the thumbnail version especially if you have fashion, photography, recipe, crafts or sewing party.
If your blog needs a facelift, then you might want to contract a web designer. You can still do it with blogger but WordPress has a lot to offer. Tons of plug-ins that will help make your blogging experience easy. I have started a series Why I moved to WordPress part 1. You might want to consider moving to wordpress. Blogger is also great but I find WordPress awesome
7. Use good images.
Always make sure that your photos are great if not good. Make sure it is not blurry or dark. Put cute labels and watermark them. I usually put my blog address (pursuitoffunctionalhome.com). Your image should be Pin worthy to make your readers pin your image. Why would you do this? Well, simply because Pinterest will bring good amount of traffic to your site. My number one blog referrer is Pinterest on top of the other major social media sites.
8. Publish useful content.
Creating blog content that will interest your readers needs research. A content that solves a problem is a great one like How to’s or tutorial. People love solutions to their problems, big or small.
9. Set goals for your blog.
Let me ask, do you use a blog planner? If not, maybe it is time to start using it. Blog planner will help you plan your strategy, things you need to do, get to know and keep track on your statistics, jot down your thoughts before it fades away in the air etc. Set goals by knowing what is the standing of your blog, what do you want to happen next? Do you have a target Alexa ranking? Do you plan to monetize your blog? What are the things you should do to achieve your target?
Every last week of the month, I sit down and brain storm on things I want to happen in my blog. I write all the posts I want to publish and lay them in my Blog calendar. I jot down all my ideas. I record my statistics found in google analytics and alexa rankings. From their, I strategies and set my goals. I have a blog planner ready for download here, feel free to use it.
I still have a lot of things to share with you, but I decided to break it down by topic. Stay tune for my next blogging tips.
