How to make Shanghai Lumpia Filipino Style

Hi friends, I am glad to share another way of cooking Lumpia Shanghai or Shanghai Lumpia. Here’s my previous recipe that I shared few years back, you might wanna check it too.

Shanghai Lumpia or Lumpia Shanghai is a common dish in the Philippines.  This fried type lumpia are filled with ground pork or beef, minced onion, carrots, and spices with the mixture held together by beaten egg (source: wiki).It is It is mostly serve at any karenderia (small eatery) and events. According to history, this originated in China and were brought by Chinese immigrants to Southeast Asia and became popular when they settled in Indonesia and Philippines. There are a number of version in making these delectable dish. Some would put carrots, spring onions, or used chicken or beef as the main ingredient.

My kids including my 1 year old boy love to eat this as is and they can finish almost half of the batch in one sitting.  I make sure to prepare 2 batches and freeze some for days when I don’t feel like cooking. Saves precious time and happy kids.

Lumpia Shanghai

Ingredients

  • 1 packet Lumpia Wrapper or Spring roll wrapper (*unsalted* If using salted wrappers, use only 2-3 teaspoons of seasoning)
  • 1/2kg Lean minced pork
  • 2 packets Magic sarap seasoning (equivalent to 4 teaspoons of your favorite seasoning)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 Medium Onions (minced)
  • 2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 Small egg (to secure wrapper)

Directions

Step 1
Combine lean minced pork, seasoning, black pepper, onions and garlic powder.
Step 2
Mix everything and let it set for 30 mins.
Step 3
Break egg and stir. Start wrapping the minced pork. Put about 1 tbsp of meat on one corner then roll it half way thru, fold the sides towards the center. Put a little egg mixture on the remaining half part of wrapper then continue rolling to the end. See my video how I did mine. Put just enough meat that you can still secure the sides when rolling.
Step 4
Heat oil. Set fire to low - medium heat. Fry the lumpia until golden brown. Serve hot with ketchup or lumpia sauce to go with it.
